Working the steps pays off!
The 12 Promises of addiction treatment are from pages 83-84 of the Big Book and cover the promises of what will happen when we diligently work the steps of the 12 step program.
So I mean come-on! What other program actually makes guarantees after you do the work? Not too many. The difference with AA is that millions have done the program and reaped the promises. So there is little to argue about. Owning drug rehab centres for two decades, I know recovery works. It works at our recovery centre when the individual does the work and make the commitment. It seldom has more to do with the program than the person. All you need is a system of recovery. And there are many. The 12 Promises of addiction treatment are the fruits of most of these programs, and of course the 12 steps. So let’s have a good, long hard look at each of them.
If we are painstaking about this phase of our development, we will be amazed before we are half way through . . .
If we are painstaking about this phase of our development, we will be amazed before we are half way through. Are these extravagant promises? We think not. They are being fulfilled among us–sometimes quickly, sometimes slowly. They will always materialize if we work for them….
The AA Promises are meant to be a promise for recovery. The AA promises usually begin to come true after an alcoholic has worked through the steps thoroughly and begins to apply them in their life. When it says that they will be “fulfilled among us-sometimes quickly, sometimes slowly” it means that the AA Promises will happen, but the time frame in which they present themselves are different for everyone. The AA promises will always materialize if the alcoholic works for them. This means that if you are working the twelve steps to the best of your ability and are as honest as you can be while working them, you will receive a spiritual awakening or experience, which then leads to a total personality change. So read them carefully and assume the feeling of having accomplished each promise for yourself. Meditate on each daily for 12 days and see what happens for you. That’s a fast-track secret right there for you.
First Promise “We are going to know a new freedom and a new happiness.” Reward: Hope instead of desperation.
Second Promise “We will not regret the past nor wish to shut the door on it.” Reward: Faith instead of despair.
Third Promise “We will comprehend the word serenity.” Reward: Courage instead of fear.
Fourth Promise “We will know peace.” Reward: Peace of mind instead of confusion.
Fifth Promise “No matter how far down the scale we have gone, we will see how our experience can benefit others.” Reward: Self-respect instead of self-contempt.
Sixth Promise “That feeling of uselessness and self-pity will disappear.” Reward: Self-confidence instead of helplessness.
Seventh Promise “We will lose interest in selfish things and gain interest in our fellows.” Reward: The respect of others instead of their pity and contempt.
Eighth Promise “Self-seeking will slip away.” Reward: A clean conscience instead of a sense of guilt.
Ninth Promise “Our whole attitude and outlook upon life will change.” Reward: Real friendships instead of loneliness.
Tenth Promise “Fear of people and of economic insecurity will leave us.” Reward: A clean pattern of life instead of a purposeless existence.
Eleventh Promise “We will intuitively know how to handle situations which used to baffle us.” Reward: The love and understanding of our families instead of their doubts and fears.
Twelfth Promise “We will suddenly realize that God is doing for us what we could not do for ourselves.” Reward: The freedom of a happy life instead of the bondage of an alcoholic obsession.
